Avid vs FCP (nee niet alweer???) Originele artikel CLICKBy Lawrence Jordan After many years of working on the Avid Media Composer, and several years of working professionally in Final Cut Pro, I’ve come to the conclusion that the Media Composer is the digital equivalent of the Moviola, the primary tool of professional editors for generations.

Avid Quicktime workflows part 1

Avid Editor Quicktime Work Flow For Proper Brightness Levels There seems to be a decent amount of confusion about which settings should be selected when exporting a video as Quicktime and then importing the Quicktime movie into an Avid editor. In this article I will describe the proper settings for exporting video out of a third party application such as Adobe After Effects using the Avid Quicktime DNxHD codec and then importing the Quicktime DNxHD movie into an editor. Four workflows are shown, one of which is invalid. This same workflow should hold true for all the Avid Quicktime codecs. It will not apply to non-Avid Quicktime codecs....

Look at all the plasterers, welders, carpenters, model makers and other practical artisans who got their hands dirty on the set of the new Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And then there’s 35mm film. Lots of it. Spielberg, as you may know, edits his movies at Amblin in LA on a KEM, with a longtime collaborator, editor Michael Kahn, cutting workprint. Stunts? Harrison Ford, despite hitting retirement age, is known for doing his own on camera. Digital doubles? Maybe, if a bad guy has to get incinerated, but even then they try to stick with the real actor as long as possible.

BBC\'s Springwatch Goes From TV To Web With Avid The all-Avid tapeless workflow which is used to produce the phenomenally successful BBC Two programme Springwatch has also been instrumental in speeding up the production of video material for the programme\'s website. The Springwatch workflow part of a production village set up on location at Pensthorpe Nature Reserve near Fakenham in Norfolk - is built around an Avid Unity shared storage system with 8Tb storage with full mirroring, and an Avid Interplay production asset management system. Editing is handled using four Media Composer Adrenaline suites and a laptop running Media Composer software. Two Avid AirSpeed systems handle ingest from the network of hidden cameras and the studio cameras, and two further AirSpeed systems are used for transmission.

Monitor Gang In the Avid Audio Mixer tool there are gang adjustments that allow you to group adjustments across tracks and have two or more sliders move at the same time.
Opslag unlimited!

Unity Isis

Engineered to deliver enterprise-level performance, availability, and scalability Introducing a breakthrough in large-scale collaborative technology: the Avid Unity ISIS (Infinitely Scalable Intelligent Storage) media network. Running on standard Gigabit Ethernet technology, Avid Unity ISIS systems expand the potential of any media enterprise with facility-wide uninterrupted access to media; powerful yet simple management tools; and an open architecture that supports both Avid and non-Avid clients in a range of mission-critical environments, including: Avid Unity ISIS product brief [pdf] Broadcast and media production environments that must support large numbers of end users in real time, with the highest reliability and availability High-quality, high-pressure SD and Avid DNxHD editing and finishing (all formats up to 145 Mb/sec.) for collaborative projects such as "reality TV" and special events coverage Educational media labs that need to accommodate and administrate increasing student demand and expanding curricula Intelligent, four-dimensional scalability The highly scalable, self-balancing, distributed architecture of the Avid Unity ISIS system offers practically unlimited potential for growth: when you add capacity, you add intelligent processing power. The Avid Unity ISIS file system can expand from 8 TB to 192 TB with four-dimensional scalability: Capacity. Simply attach additional Avid Unity ISIS Engines and the file system automatically load-balances all of the storage blades without interrupting operations. Clients. Avid Unity ISIS media networks can accommodate up to 330 real-time clients, up to 1,000 user accounts.Performance. Scale bandwidth to deliver real-time SD and Avid DNxHD media, with higher bandwidth support planned for future release. Reliability. Redundant storage and connectivity ensure continued availability, while self-healing drive blades instantly redistribute data in case of a drive failure. Innovative engineering for absolute reliability The Avid ISIS Engine is a unique blade-based storage subsystem that features intelligent dual-drive storage elements, integrated Ethernet switching, and redundant power and cooling. Built-in system-wide health monitoring signals any point of failure. Avid ISIS Engines, storage blades, switch blades, and power/cooling modules can be easily added, removed, or hot-swapped while the system is live. The system automatically adapts to component failures and replacements - while work continues without delay. Unlike common storage area networks (SANs) the advanced Avid ISIS architecture distributes data and metadata so that each intelligent storage element can make instant decisions that collectively optimize the performance, capacity, and health of the entire system. Complementary redundancy across all components provides an unprecedented seven layers of protection for uninterrupted availability and absolute reliability in high-pressure broadcast, post, or film production environments

Blog met dank aan http://fearfulinvestor.typepad.com . Wall Street analysts have given up on Avid Technology (4 neutral ratings, 3 sells, including two Focus Sells!). I think that times are about to change. Avid (AVID $23.11 on 5/15/08) is the worldwide leader in providing enterprise software for video broadcasting, and audio and video editing and production. Avid also has a consumer video production and editing business.

Available in either a 5 drive mini-tower (ST), as well as a 16 drive 3U rackmount chassis (SR), Avid has a configuration option to meet your needs. Latest technology SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) interconnect provides simple plug and play setup, while parity RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) prevents losing media because of a failed drive. Raw capacities range from 2.5TB to 16TB per editing system. Avid VideoRAID ST and SR have enough bandwidth to provide real-time playback of uncompressed HD media, even during drive failure rebuild mode, making these ultra-high performance arrays a perfect match for Avid\'s latest generation of editing applications. VideoRAID ST and SR keep you working and your project on track - no more downtime, no more excuses.

He cited a number of factors for the companies demise, a few being low profit margins, competition from Apple itself, the bad economy and other changes in the market.

The Blue Arrow Button (Replace Edit Button)

The Blue Arrow Button (Replace Edit Button) OK… so we all know what the Red Arrow Button does… it overwrites anything it touches with no mercy. And we all know what the Yellow Arrow Button does… it inserts anywhere you like and on occasion throws your entire sequence out of sync… sweet. But then there’s that Blue Arrow Button… what the heck does it do?

Avid Introduces Next-Generation RAID Solutions

Avid Introduces Next-Generation RAID Solutions New VideoRAID ST and SR solutions enable customers to achieve full performance with no data loss during drive rebuild process TEWKSBURY, Mass., May 5, 2008 – Avid Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: AVID) today announced the next-generation of its high-performance storage disk arrays – Avid® VideoRAID® ST and Avid VideoRAID SR solutions – which combine real-time performance, cost-effective SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) drive technology, and the security of fail-safe data protection in the event of a disk drive failure. Unlike other RAID solutions that may be unusable during a drive rebuild, Avid VideoRAID solutions help customers keep up with the fast pace of digital content creation by maintaining full performance and data protection, while rebuilding the drives in the background. Customers will also be able to take advantage of real-time playback of up to two streams of uncompressed HD on as few as eight Avid VideoRAID drives. Additionally, Avid is offering all new VideoRAID ST and SR customers a three year warranty on drive mechanisms and enclosures, providing advanced exchange of replacements parts at no additional cost. “This is just another example of how Avid continues to drive high-quality products to market that offer great performance and value to our customers,” said Kirk Arnold, executive vice president and general manager of Avid Video. “By offering real-time parity with these new solutions, Avid is able to help eliminate the headaches and loss of valuable hours and money associated with downtime. This news, coupled with the new editing lineup we announced last month, is just another example of how Avid is continuing to innovate and deliver on its New Thinking.” Available in a 5-drive tower (ST) or a 16-drive rack mount (SR) configuration, Avid VideoRAID ST/SR disk arrays support a wide range of Avid editing systems, including the recently announced Media Composer®, Symphony™ Nitris® and NewsCutter® family of products, as well as third-party applications, via an industry-standard SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) interconnect. The products provide the protection of parity through the use of RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) which can handle multiple streams of uncompressed SD and HD media with ease and offer a capacity ranging from 2.5TB to 16TB per editing system. New Features of Avid VideoRAID ST/SR Avid’s new VideoRAID ST/SR storage configurations offer a number of new features and benefits to customers, including: Fail-safe protection of content – Real-time parity RAID goes beyond conventional RAID protection by enabling systems to continue to operate at full performance with no data loss. Customers will now be able to complete any work in progress during drive failures, without loss of media and without requiring immediate drive replacement. Full performance during drive rebuild – Avid VideoRAID ST /SR eliminates costs associated with system downtime by enabling customer’s systems to be fully functional during the rebuild process of failed drives. Once the rebuild is complete, Avid VideoRAID resumes full content protection. Configuration flexibility – Customers can configure systems to their specific needs with a choice of drive capacity, 5- or 16-drive array models, and up to two arrays supported per CPU. Supported raw capacities range from 2.5TB to 16TB. Redundant power supplies (VideoRAID SR models) – Via robust, load-sharing power supplies, customers benefit from added protection and reduced stress on their system, while operating without interruption on only one power supply. Removable controllers, drives, and power supplies – Field-replaceable components can be easily removed, making service simple and quick – to maximize uptime. Optimized for use with Avid editing systems and software – Customers will benefit from increased productivity in the field as a result of rigorous testing of Avid VideoRAID ST and SR with Avid editing systems and software.

There is no requirement for an external switch – just one cable running from the storage to the client. Benefit Integrated switching makes setup and support extremely simple, even for the smallest workgroups. Also, unlike typical SANs, there is no need for a secondary network to support metadata – data and metadata are all handled on a single network connection. Feature Intelligent load balancing Function Automatic load balancing distributes data evenly among storage servers, so each server can perform within its optimal range Benefit Optimum real-time performance ensures that media can be accessed in the shortest possible time Feature Health monitoring and administration tools Function Browser-based, graphical representation of the whole system lets users pinpoint areas of concern and respond quickly to a system alert Benefit Administrators can isolate and replace system components quickly and maintain optimum redundancy levels Note: Product specifications subject to change without notice.

Avid VideoRAID Features

Avid VideoRAID Features Feature Fail-safe protection of content Benefit Real-time parity RAID goes beyond conventional RAID protection for even greater peace of mind. With Avid VideoRAID, a disk drive failure is not a catastrophic event. The system will continue to operate without data loss and at full performance should a drive fail within the unit. This enables the completion of work in progress without requiring immediate drive replacement. Feature Full performance during drive rebuild Benefit If an Avid VideoRAID drive failure does occur, simply swap out the bad drive module and the array will automatically begin a background reconstruction. Costly downtime is eliminated since the system is fully functional (at full performance) during the rebuild process. Once the rebuild is completed, Avid VideoRAID resumes full content protection. A RAID 5 solution, in contrast, may be completely unusable during a drive rebuild, resulting in unproductive downtime. Feature High bandwidth and innovative Multi-Stream Technology (MST) Benefit Interface rates of up to 320 MB/s per channel (via Ultra320 SCSI) ensure that Avid VideoRAID arrays meet the performance requirements of film, video, and broadcast production. The exclusive MST functionality uses a sophisticated stream-handling algorithm that works with the system\'s on-board RAID controller(s) to support the simultaneous real-time playback of multiple streams of uncompressed SD and HD video. See the Avid Local Storage Drive Striping Tables on the Avid Knowledge Base for Avid VideoRAID RTR320/RTR320X configuration and stream count details. Feature Configuration flexibility Benefit With a choice of drive capacity, 5- or 10-drive array models, and up to four RTR320/FCR2 or two RTR320X/FCR2X arrays supported per CPU, customers can configure their system to meet their unique needs. Supported raw capacities range from 1.25 TB (1.0 TB usable) to 10 TB (8 TB usable). Feature Redundant power supplies (RTR320X/FCR2X models) Benefit Robust, load-sharing power supplies offer added protection and reduce the stress on an individual supply. The array can operate without interruption on only one power supply, if required. Removable for easy service. Feature Removable controllers, drives, and power supplies Benefit Field-replaceable components can be easily removed, making service a snap and maximizing uptime. Quick job changes can be made by simply swapping drive modules. Feature Optimized for use with Avid editing systems and software (RTR320/RTR320X) Benefit The Avid VideoRAID RTR320/RTR320X has been rigorously tested with Avid editing systems and software for guaranteed configuration support. Optimized performance and reliability maximizes productive time in the field. The FCR2/FCR2X is supported for various applications. Feature Outstanding warranty policy Benefit A three-year warranty on the drive mechanisms and the enclosure offer added security. To minimize downtime, during the warranty period replacements parts are supplied in advance and at no additional cost (current Avid Support contract required for advance replacement).

You can even display and edit 3D material offline — without conforming — using industry-first stereoscopic editing tools and workflows. Sync with Pro Tools EditorsMake the audio post workflow easier by making projects directly accessible to Pro Tools audio editors through Video Satellite. If you’re using a Windows-based system, you can also author DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, and fast-turnaround approval DVDs (use native authoring tools on a Mac). Smoother BWF WorkflowsEase the post audio workflow when exporting timeline audio tracks as BWF (Broadcast WAV) files. Just insert the sequence timecode based on your project type as you’re exporting the tracks to create a fast and easy sync reference for downstream processes that don’t support OMF or AAF, such as slave playback devices. * MetaFuze works with Windows-based computers, including Windows XP and Vista, Macs running Windows through Boot Camp or other emulation.Complete Color CorrectionSave time and maintain the highest quality production with the fully integrated and flexible 10-bit color correction toolset. Quickly and accurately match colors from shot to shot using NaturalMatch. Get fine control over shots with animatable color correction, or dive into the large palette of easy-to-use tools to manually refine settings or get creative with the color. Build up your effects library by choosing from tons of third-party AVX plug-ins available. Dazzle and Deliver with the Included Production SuiteCreate stunning visual effects and transitions. Design titles and graphics that animate across 2D or 3D spaces. Set the mood with music you generate and control. And deliver projects in the highest quality for the web or on DVD. With the included Production Suite, a powerful collection of popular third-party creative tools, you have plenty of options to get the look, sound, and quality you want.Share Media, Projects, and IdeasExperience the most collaborative workflow and get things done on time and on budget. Seamlessly integrate with Avid Unity media networks, and you and your team can access and play the same files and capture media to the same volume simultaneously, in real time. And because media bins aren’t linked to specific projects or users, you can open bins and access files from other projects — even when in use by others — without having to copy media. Share Projects for Audio PostCollaborating with Pro Tools audio editors, remixers, and sound designers is easy. Export audio from your video projects to Pro Tools for audio production, with all media and metadata intact. Or for the fastest workflow, add Video Satellite to have Pro Tools editors sync directly with Media Composer projects, eliminating having to render, transcode, or copy files. Take all of your settings with you to any project through your own user profile - even when moving from an offline workstation to an online Avid Symphony finishing system. All shortcuts, keyboard, and screen customization are accessible, so you’ll be up and running in no time. Raise the Bar with InterplayWhen the stakes are high, bring collaboration to the highest level with Avid Interplay asset management systems. Instantly access media and secure files from unauthorized use. Always have the current production elements in play and synced through automated tracking. And with sophisticated multi-contributor asset management, multi-resolution workflows, and rules-based transcoding, you can put the flow in workflow for total facility-wide collaboration.
